Music and Songwriting: I Think I See It Coming Together…Maybe, Maybe Not

On January 2013, I had had these tracks that I had completed for a new producer. He had already had his fair share of producing for the rap industry, with plaques from working on albums like UGK and whatnot, but decided he wanted to make a transition into R&B. Even though he was good with producing R&B tracks, I could tell he had a knack for Alternative Rock tracks as well. Secretly I was told myself, that one day I would venture into Alternative Rock, after I’ve made my mark on R&B, but in due time young lad…in due time. Anyway, I knew that this was a producer I needed to keep around because I stay struggling with finding producers lol. So now I had him, Crown Jones, and Ikory who goes by “Magic”. Then the uh-oh part came. Well, the artist who I had demoed songs for, was starting to go through a legal battle with her record company. I knew those songs wouldn’t even get to her at that point and if they did, we would be waiting forever! I talked to Crown and told him how I’d rather just keep those songs for us and try to shop them to other artist. I had no luck again, labels hated them. They didn’t understand the way I arrange my melodies and why do I switch up melodies so fast and the beat…why did the beats sound so late 80’s early 90’s? Umm let’s see…because that’s how I write, that is my style, that beat sound was the sound they were going for, and quite frankly, I loveeee the 90’s so I didn’t see anything wrong. But once again, that’s not what’s on the radio now so I knew…we would get nowhere. No lie, Crown would get confused with my melody switch ups, and I would get confused with some of his beat patterns, but hey, I felt that that’s what made us, us, and that we would grow to understand each other’s style. By the end of January, we basically said, “Fuck this shit. Fuck all that shit they’re talking about…we can do this ourselves.” Let’s start a group. Why not? Crown had the beats and rapped. I could pick singing and those horrible choir techniques back up, and I wrote for days. Who’s going to tell us no? I knew how to handle business and the legalities of things, so that wouldn’t be a problem for us, if we both work, we can both split everything 50/50 and pay for everything and can split the profits 50/50 without someone digging into our pockets. That day we wrote out our group’s plan, and named ourselves, Apollo’s Interlude. Why Apollo’s Interlude? Apollo is the god of music, and we come together in order to be his interlude when he steps away; in order to keep the good music going. So let’s start the album…
