R.I.P. Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston was a part of the last of a dying musical breed. Her voice was one that was recognizable and unmatched.  I may be a young one but I do know who Ms. Houston is. I remember going through my dad’s crates full of records during my earlier years of elementary and coming across Whitney’s debut album and singing along to You Give Good Love, Greatest Love of All, How Will I Know, and Saving All My Love for You. Then her second record came out and the most recognizable song was/is I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me). I enjoyed having to dance/sing to this song in high school during the musical, Ovations, which my high school in Pasadena, CA put on every year. That is such a fun song. I can’t recall anything I knew from her third record. But The Bodyguard Soundtrack is dear to me; one of my favorites to this day. I still found/find myself listening to it during my morning wake-up routine. I love trying to hit those notes knowing that my vocal chords will be shot. Lol. I’m Every Woman, Run To You, I Have Nothing, and my favorite I Will Always Love You. I wanted her character to end up with the bodyguard so bad, ah well. Whitney Houston also contributed to great soundtracks to the movies like Waiting to Exhale, Cinderella, and Prince of Egypt. The Preacher’s Wife was also an amazing soundtrack. I knew almost every song; you would have thought I was in the church choir. Lol. But my jams were on her fourth album, My Love Is Your Love; It’s Not Right but It’s Okay and my ultimate jam, Heartbreak Hotel. I didn’t really vibe with any of her albums after that, but she still was a talented singer. The only person now who can even come close with taking her place as far and talent and vocal ability is Mariah Carey. Hate that Whitney had to die so young, because 48 years old is still young in my books. Drugs are the devil, yeah I said it. Too bad she couldn’t shake her vice before time ran out. She will be missed, especially musically.
