Those 2 Calls That Happened In Those 2 Minutes

……….”I’m not ready for this yet,” is all I could think. I’ll take ‘English Customs’ for 500 Alex. Let’s take is back to where it all began. Yesterday night I acquired $10 worth of international minutes through Skype, seeing that I plan to study abroad in London this summer so I needed to make a few calls. I’ll be out there at one of London’s universities to obtain my European Studies minor. While attending, I was (and still am) hoping to get an internship while I’m living out there. I just feel as if it would look fantastic on my resume. F.Y.I., I want to be a marketer for a record label. Now back to the story. It’s now 3 A.M. in the states, Texas preferably, which means it is 9 A.M. in London and I’m pretty sure the record labels are all open by this time. I can Sony Entertainment first and I’m excited because it’s ringing, and at the same time I’m watching my money diminish making sure I don’t get disconnected. The lady answers “Sony Music” and I say “Hi”. She says “Hello” and then I give her my spill on how I want to obtain an internship there and she tells me what I need to do and what not. It’s like she was rushing but I didn’t mind because I’m paying for those minutes. I hang up and call EMI Music Group. A lady answers “Hello” and I say “Hi” and was about to go into my little spill and then she hangs up. I didn’t get hostile, I just called back. She answers again “EMI” and I say “Hello, I’m trying to find how I can obtain an internship with EMI”. She starts saying some words so fast and I’m sitting there clueless. I’m used to hearing Americans talk fast or even foreign but when it comes to being on the phone, I was inexperienced. Sounding stupid of course I asked her to repeat what she said. She then said, “We don’t have and email, we just have post and you can come by to drop your resume and cover letter off.” And I thank her and say bye. Once again rushing, but once again I don’t mind because I’m paying for the minutes. But I got to thinking, I know she can tell by my accent that I’m American and she tells me I can come by and drop it off. Yes, she could think I’m there now but come on, really? After I ended my calls I ended up in the bathroom applying my Biore facial cleanser when all of a sudden, a lot of things dawned on me. I get this feeling ever so often when I come across new information or when I enter into a new environment. It’s called the “The More I Learn, The More I Know How Much I Really Don’t Know”. It kind of baffles me because I don’t like being ignorant and I know the only way to end the ignorance is to learn, which I what I plan to do. But, I know never to say “Hi”, always “Hello” and to talk as fast as I can because they seem like they are on the go. Yes, it does come across rude but I am an American, and I don’t know their customs. They may feel I talk to slow (but if you knew me you’d know I talk fast) or may even look down at the fact that I spell the word color, color instead of colour. I know I couldn’t own a business that was a part of the Global Market Integration at this time, because I don’t even know global customs. I need books on every country that I plan to visit or come in close contact with because that is a very important part of business. Culture, Etiquette, Manners, and day-to-day living are very important because I useless for me to feel affronted, if in that part of the world it is custom. But I will not be stereotyped as that ‘Dumb Westerner’ or that ‘Useless American’. I will be educated because you need knowledge in order to make it far in this world…not just in this country.
