C.Nichole – “KING”

“KING” was originally going to be about how men of African are superheroes and the world knows what they’re capable of, and that’s why they face so much adversity. I got the beat by GHSTKNTE and started to dislike that idea. It felt too negative to me. So I decided to flip all the negative things that I’ve heard and seen men of African descent go through and turn it into something positive. I keep pages of random lyrics that pop in my head, and one line said, “You shine so bright even in the night.” That lyric popped off the writing of “KING” while still intertwining some of my superhero thoughts, which is why I mention the TV show Black Lightning. I loved that show; I hate it ended. Anywho, sometimes I’m still amazed by the lyrics I write in terms of storytelling. But what really made this song even more special was shooting it in Togo, West Africa. Yoss Spencer and Khaled were amazing! They really made my vision come to life. You’d never know that I was 10 feet off the ground trying to balance myself on the boat, or the fact that we had to hike to get to the waterfall and I was sweating like crazy, or that I was sniffing like crazy because I was in-between sicknesses and my head was hurting. But I knew I flew too far not to put my best foot forward. The song is meaningful, and the video is beautiful. For those who’ve been to Togo, they already know what I’m talking about. But if you’ve never been to Togo, push play and explore…
