I Can/Could Learn Some Things from My Professor
I needed a recommendation letter in order to study aboard in Ghana for summer 2011. I decided to go to my International Business of Globalization Economics professor because I aced the midterm and she seemed cool. I already knew she had studied in London and worked on Wall Street in New York for some years. While she was writing my letter we started talking. She was correcting my name and she said “Mrs. Clark, or Ms. Clark.” I said Ms. and she laughed and said “Good. That’s good because you’re too young anyway.” I had thought about my ex-fiancé that got X-ed out of my life the previous day. Then she told me about how she lived in London as well and how it was for her. Anything that has to do with London, I love it so it was all good to me. After she graduated from earning her bachelor’s in economics and finance she told me she moved to New York to trade oil commodities. Dave Chappelle lived on her floor, she got asked out by Derek Jeter, and partied with Diddy; by the way she was making $800,000 a year. I was like wow, I could totally see myself making that much and being up there with successful people without being famous; but she was single while doing this. I started to think and realized I wouldn’t be able to do that when I move back to Los Angeles is I was still engaged, let along just with him. We started talking about Ghana because she wanted to study there but she had got engaged. He proposed to her on like this huge antique boat in New Zealand. I was like hmmm…nothing like that happened to me, I think I need to step it up. But what caught my attention more than anything was that her and her husband has a similar background. She met him trading oil commodities because he did/does that as well. She also told me all of these wonderful stories about her success and what it brought her. That brought it all together for me. I knew that I needed to follow her steps. Success first and only, then I worry about the extras. And when I do worry about the extras, make sure we have a similar background, present, and future; having a similar present just isn’t good enough. She may not think the talk meant that much but it did to me because it put things into prospective for me. I’ll be chatting with her more often. 🙂
