This Is a Man’s World So Make Room for Me

James Brown said that this is a man’s world. That may not be true in every aspect but in the music industry it surely is. When I started my internship with ‘Stache Media/RED Distribution (Sony) I remember looking around saying it’s a lot of men in this industry. It never occurred to me because my music players were filled with mostly female music. Then I looked through my music players and realized that was a lie as well. My internship consisted of mostly working with Indie/Rock artist and let me tell you, they treat you differently. They are nice and respectful…well at least the ones I’ve met and worked with. When I would go out on my own to network with Hip-Hop artist, I never got the respect and got shady niceness only because I’m good-looking. When I used to meet artist when I was a model, I expected guys to look at me like a “piece of meat” because of what I was wearing as a model. Now when I meet them I wear professional clothes with a cute/elegant twist to it so they’ll recognize I’m not a groupie and I’m here to work. It seems that that still doesn’t matter because my face is still exposed and I’m aware that I’m good-looking. I’ve been given “the eyes” and been sized up by so many rappers and their team. That is so disrespectful and unprofessional! The more incidents that occur like this makes me not want to ever apply to work in the Urban division of a label because if I did, you might as well label me “the bitch” now. I do not and will not play that! I’ve had incidents where I’ve gave out my card to an artist and they would call me to try to “talk” to me. I respectfully tell them that I gave them my card for business and not for a date. It’s amazing how you wouldn’t want to work with me, but you would fuck me. This is a man’s game and I can play it. I’m very thankful that I was raised by my dad because I have incite that most women wouldn’t and don’t have. This is not a blogpost to bash and name-call the rappers that have done it because that is unacceptable. One should always be aware to not to blacklist yourself from an industry. But dealing with this makes me want to be in the industry even more to help teach these men a few things. I’m a smart, good-looking, straight-forward, determined, no bullshitting type woman and I will be at the top sitting right along with the men and I will be given the same respect. #GameOn
